CWPW's Medical Home for Children Provides a World of Medical Care Under One Roof |
|
Parents in the Lower Hudson Valley and Southern Connecticut, seeking quality pediatric medical care for their chronically ill children, used to have to negotiate a complex medical maze, shuttling between offices, juggling schedules, and often having to travel long distances on a frequent basis, to get proper diagnoses and treatment.
Now, coordinated, comprehensive care is available in one convenient location — thanks to the child health professionals at the Medical Home for Children of Children's and Women's Physicians of Westchester. |
Leonard Newman, MD |
Medical Home is the brainchild of Leonard Newman, MD, President of CWPW , along with colleagues Allen Dozor, MD and Robin Altman, MD.
Medical Home was conceived to meet one specific need:
to provide a single focal point for assessing, diagnosing and treating children with multiple chronic illnesses.
At the same time, CWPW's Medical Home for Children assists parents and caregivers, who heretofore were forced to visit multiple locations in order to obtain care for their child.
Sanctioned by the American Academy of Pediatrics, CWPW's Medical Home for Children is rapidly proving to be a great step forward in providing a broad range of medical services to children, and in offering support for their families.
Every child deserves a Medical Home.

Theresa Hetzler, MD, Medical Director at CWPW's Medical Home for Children, notes that the concept is a fully coordinated outpatient care program, while maintaining a focus on the primary care physician.
“What we do is different,” Dr. Hetzler says. “These are children with complex medical needs, so we allow them to see several specialists in one setting. They are chronic, fragile children, so having all of these medical professionals under the CWPW umbrella allows us to discuss a child's care, their diagnosis, and subsequent treatment.”
There is a medical coordinator on staff, who plans a roadmap of care for each case among participating physicians, from pulmonologists agastroenterologists and neurologists, to psychologists and dieticians.
Typically, referrals are made from a child's primary pediatrician, or from parents themselves.
According to Dr. Hetzler, one parent recently summed up the importance of CWPW's Medical Home for Children for her child, and her entire family. “This is”, she stated, “exactly what we needed.” |
From initial intake and case review, to comprehensive care, it's all covered under one roof, eliminating the need for parents to visit multiple offices. “Parents used to have to scramble to find the care they need for their child,” Dr. Hetzler says. “We strive to make this as easy and painless on parents as possible.” “It's very much one-stop shopping,” explains Arlene Adler, PhD, staff psychologist and Clinical Director at CWPW's Medical Home for Children. “These children are often complicated cases, so this is formulated into precise, comprehensive, coordinated care.” With about 10 on-site medical specialists, “all communication goes back to the primary pediatrician,” Dr. Adler says.
As a psychologist, Dr. Adler also provides much-needed assessment, care and support to parents and patients' siblings. Many Medical Home for Children patients suffer from severe syndromes, and are diagnosed as “failing to thrive,” and this can lead to hardship within the family. “My role is to assist the caregivers, siblings and the children themselves. We assess where the child is developmentally, and treat accordingly.” Medical Home for Children at CWPW provides a world of medical care and subspecialties under one roof.
